Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against Waste Connections, the owner of Chiquita Canyon Landfill, for failing to control a hazardous chemical reaction affecting nearby residents.
The ongoing chemical reaction, which has been smoldering for nearly two years, has caused hazardous gases and liquids to break through the landfill's surface, creating a public nuisance.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger emphasized the need for accountability stating, 'This lawsuit is a powerful tool that demands the landfill owners bring immediate relief to impacted residents.'
Despite efforts from various agencies, the mitigation measures have not permanently stopped the terrible smell affecting the surrounding communities of Castaic and Val Verde.
