The first MLB spring training ball-strike challenge was successful
Briefly

In a notable moment during spring training, Cubs pitcher Cody Poteet became the first player to successfully utilize the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) to challenge a call against the Dodgers. The challenge, which resulted in an increased strike count against batter Max Muncy, highlights the ongoing testing of ABS technology in this season’s games, with approximately 60% featuring the challenge. This system, utilizing Hawk-Eye technology, represents a significant change in how calls can be contested, foreshadowing future integrations into Major League Baseball.
"This is a pretty big decision for the game of baseball," MLB executive vice president of baseball operations Morgan Sword told MLB.com about the decision to try the ABS challenge system during spring training.
"The ABS Challenge System is in place for spring training, and the Cubs took advantage of it in the first inning vs the Dodgers."
Roughly 60 percent of spring training games this season will feature the ABS challenge system, which has been tested in the minor leagues since 2021, according to MLB.
The system uses Hawk-Eye technology to monitor where the location of the pitch is in relation to the batter's strike zone.
