Manchester City's management is contemplating releasing players who struggle with the rigorous match schedule, focusing on key players, including Kevin De Bruyne and others like Ilkay Gundogan and John Stones. Coach Pep Guardiola acknowledged the need for discussion with medical staff and the players themselves regarding their ability to keep up with the demanding schedule. Along with potential departures, the club has already started refreshing its squad, having signed various new players during the January transfer window, indicating a busy summer ahead following a disappointing campaign.
"We have to sit down with the doctors, with physios, with the players, with the agents, and be clear that some of them cannot sustain every three days, every month, every two months, playing every three, four days. So this is the reality. There's one more year, [then] a World Cup."
City have already freshened their squad to an extent, signing forward Omar Marmoush, midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as well as defenders Abduhakir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, in January.
