Martin Dubravka has renewed his contract with Newcastle United until the end of next season despite earlier rumors of a January transfer to Al-Shabab. The veteran goalkeeper chose to remain at the club despite the interest in Burnley’s James Trafford as Newcastle's potential new number one. Dubravka's performance this season has been more consistent, even with Nick Pope's return from injury. Coach Eddie Howe praised Dubravka's commitment and focus during a tumultuous period, as his position remains uncertain with further competition expected.
Dubravka had also deputised for Pope following an injury in the previous December but struggled as Newcastle could only manage a seventh-placed finish.
Howe said on Thursday: "It's no secret that [Dubravka] had options to move on in January, but he deserves huge credit for keeping his focus. We are delighted Martin is staying with us."
