The Cai Rang and other floating markets in southern Vietnam are facing decline as economic development and improved infrastructure reshape the region. Once vital cultural icons dating back to the early 20th century, these markets relied on waterways for trade. However, over the last two decades, their size has diminished significantly, with only two of ten major markets maintaining a notable presence. Cai Rang has shrunk from its peak size, and related markets like Cai Be have completely disappeared, leading to a transformation in local commerce and tourism demographics.
"Cai Rang, and other markets like it, were once among the most recognisable cultural icons of southern Vietnam, with a history dating back to the early 20th Century."
"Today, Cai Rang comprises about 200 vessels, fewer than half as many as during its peak in the 1990s."
