In response to mounting concerns about the implications of the 2024 presidential election for their community, El Tímpano, a news outlet serving Latino and Mayan immigrants in California, introduced source protection guidelines. Managing editor Heather Tirado Gilligan emphasized the heightened need to report safely and responsibly on the stories of those impacted by immigration policy, particularly undocumented individuals. The guidelines prioritize informed consent, limited identification of sources, and enhanced engagement to ensure the safety and clarity of communication with sources, reflecting the outlet's commitment to safeguarding their community amidst a challenging political landscape.
We became very concerned with what the election might mean for the people in our community, some of whom are undocumented immigrants and who we really rely on to fuel our reporting.
We felt like it was more important than ever to be able to tell their stories, but we also wanted to do it in a way where we felt like we were keeping them safe.
The first facet of the guidelines entails talking to sources and making sure they understand that.
The guidelines have three components: source protection and informed consent, limited identification policy and enhanced in-person engagement.
