Infant Mortality and Births Increased In Most States With Abortion Bans, Studies Find
Briefly

After the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, new studies reveal that states with newly enacted abortion bans experienced higher rates of infant mortality and births. The research, conducted by analyzing data from diverse sources across all states and D.C., found that these impacts are particularly significant in communities facing socioeconomic disadvantages and racial disparities, especially in southern states. The findings indicate a troubling trend, with an estimated 478 additional infant deaths and about 22,000 more births than expected in these states.
The studies show that after the Roe v. Wade decision, the majority of states with abortion bans experienced increased infant mortality and birth rates.
Research indicates that those socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are disproportionately impacted by the changes in abortion laws, highlighting existing disparities.
