Tim Andrews, a 66-year-old man, underwent a successful pig kidney transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital, becoming the second person to receive this procedure. His recovery has been remarkable, allowing him to leave the hospital just one week post-surgery. This transplant is pivotal in exploring xenotransplantation as a solution to the shortage of human organs for donation. Previous attempts with pig organs faced challenges, but ongoing FDA-approved studies indicate progress in this field, with further trials planned to monitor the long-term viability of pig organ transplants in humans.
"When I woke up in the recovery room, I was a new man," Andrews told The Associated Press.
"This is uncharted territory," said Mass General's Dr. Tatsuo Kawai, who led both Andrews' surgery and the world's first pig kidney transplant last year.
