"Family say they were left in dark about risk of them developing the neurodegenerative disorder"
"Doctors left a man and his family in the dark for years about his diagnosis with Huntington's disease, a rare and devastating progressive neurodegenerative disorder passed from one generation to the next."
"The claim is made in a lawsuit in which the HSE and several GPs in the west of Ireland are being sued for negligence by the now-deceased man's daughter, who herself has been diagnosed with the hereditary disease."
Doctors delayed informing a man and his family about his Huntington's disease diagnosis, leaving them unaware of hereditary risk for years. Huntington's disease is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is passed from one generation to the next. The deceased man's daughter later received a diagnosis of the same hereditary condition. A negligence lawsuit has been filed against the HSE and several general practitioners in the west of Ireland by the daughter, alleging failure to inform and resulting harm from being left unaware of the familial risk.
