On April 19, 1995, the Oklahoma City bombing marked its 30th anniversary as the deadliest domestic terrorism event in U.S. history. Amy Downs recalls that fateful day when she was buried under rubble for over six hours after the explosion, reflecting on the fragility of life. The bombing claimed 168 lives, including her best friend, and changed the course of many. Downs' story highlights the profound impact of that day and her vow to live differently thereafter, amidst the destruction caused by a homemade bomb with devastating ingredients.
She didn't know it, but she was buried upside down under 10 feet of rubble, sandwiched between two slabs of concrete. "And so at that point I really started experiencing what people talk about when they say they had life flashing before their eyes."
I remember taking those first breaths of fresh air and just like promising God right then I will never live my life the same," Downs said.
