OpenAI's Fidji Simo says Meta's team didn't anticipate risks of AI products well-her first task under Sam Altman was to address mental health concerns | Fortune
"I would say the thing that I don't think we did well at Meta is actually anticipating the risks that our products would create in society," Simo told Wired. "At OpenAI, these risks are very real."
"So it is a very big responsibility, but it's one that I feel like we have both the culture and the prioritization to really address up-front," Simo said."
"Tasked with managing anything outside CEO Sam Altman's scope of research and computing infrastructure for the company's AI models, she detailed a stark contrast between working at the tech company headed by Mark Zuckerberg and one by Altman in a Wired interview published Monday."
Fidji Simo joined OpenAI as CEO of Applications in May, overseeing products outside core research and infrastructure. She previously worked at Meta for a decade and led Instacart for four years. Mental-health risks from AI chatbots, including users forming relationships with bots or seeking crisis support from them, is a primary initiative. Simo is launching an AI certification program to bolster worker skills and attempting to smooth AI-driven disruption within the company. OpenAI is prioritizing anticipation and mitigation of societal risks from its products in response to growing criticism and real-world incidents.
