What It Feels Like to Live Without a Smartphone

A switch to a TCL flip phone was made during a visit to a sister. Despite previously deleting social apps from an iPhone, screen time remained excessive. Compulsions arose from checking notifications and social media, which affected focus while studying. A diagnosis of ADHD motivated the decision to minimize distractions. Using the flip phone was reminiscent of simpler technology use, leading to a more engaged lifestyle. Initial challenges included friends' discomfort with voice calls and the persistence of communication through messaging apps.
This wasn't born from some dramatic rock-bottom moment with technology. I wasn't doom-scrolling myself into despair.
Even after deleting Instagram and removing social apps from my iPhone 13, I was still burning through hours of daily screen time.
Recently diagnosed with ADHD, I figured I had enough trouble focusing without carrying a dopamine machine in my pocket.
The TCL flip phone felt like time travel. Suddenly, I was dragging music files from my computer like I did as a kid.
