Mexico has announced it may sue Google over the renaming of the 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' on U.S. maps, claiming that much of the Gulf is under its maritime jurisdiction. President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that a 2017 U.S. law change does not legally apply to waters outside U.S. borders. Mexico demands Google revert to the original name, arguing the change undermines its maritime sovereignty. Google counters that the name changes reflect various authoritative sources for geographic data.
What Google is doing here is changing the name of the continental shelf of Mexico and Cuba.
The change was consistent with our normal operating procedure to reflect on our platforms geographic names prescribed by different authoritative government sources.
