Miami Beach officials announced the removal of a popular pedestrian plaza and bicycle lanes on Ocean Drive, responding to a court order. This change will reinstate two-way traffic for the first time since the pandemic shutdown in May 2020. Temporary barriers will be taken down, and work will begin shortly to repaint and eliminate the bike lanes. City leaders expressed regret over the situation but emphasized their obligation to comply with Judge Sanchez's ruling, prompted by a lawsuit from a local business contending the changes negatively impacted its operations. The project will cost around $150,000.
"Unfortunately, I don't see a path at this point to be able to avoid compliance with that court order," City Manager Eric Carpenter said.
Miami Beach officials confirmed that they must adhere to the directive of Judge Beatrice Butchko Sanchez, who criticized the city for not reopening the road.
