Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 600,000 Venezuelans previously protected under a Biden administration extension. This policy change restores the previous TPS expiration date of April 2025, immediately subjecting these individuals to possible deportation. Critics argue that the renewal of TPS has become automatic, irrespective of conditions in home countries. While the Biden administration extended TPS for other nationalities, Noem's announcement currently focuses only on Venezuelans. The lack of diplomatic relations with Venezuela complicates potential deportations.
Before he left town, Mayorkas signed an order that said for 18 months they were going to extend this protection to people that are on temporary protected status, which meant that they were going to be able to stay here and violate our laws for another 18 months.
The TPS designation gives people legal authority to be in the country but doesn't provide a long-term path to citizenship. They are reliant on the government renewing their status.
