Chappy, a gray seal pup who captured the hearts of the internet, passed away shortly after his rescue in New Haven, Connecticut. The Mystic Aquarium, where he was treated, announced he died from gastrointestinal issues. Found lethargic and dehydrated, Chappy was discovered wandering into the city, likely following his instincts away from threats in the Long Island Sound. Despite treatment, including fluid therapy and fish formula, his health remained guarded, and staff shared his milestones and challenges online before his untimely death.
It's with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of Chappy, the gray seal pup we had been treating in our Animal Rescue Clinic.
Chappy got his name after a police department naming contest. It's a nod to the fact that the seal was rescued near Chapel Street.
Experts have said he likely followed his instincts away from the Long Island Sound and potential threats but got lost as he ventured deeper...into the city.
Chappy was estimated to be only a few weeks old, found to be lethargic, dehydrated and in thin condition, weighing a mere 28 pounds.
