Malaki Starks, a highly regarded safety from Georgia, has generated significant interest from the Miami Dolphins as the NFL draft approaches. During the NFL scouting combine, he expressed confidence in his adaptability as a player, describing himself as a potential "chess piece" in defensive schemes. With the Dolphins needing to fill the safety position due to free agency challenges, including the potential loss of Jevon Holland, Starks's versatile skill set may prove invaluable. His past success covering elite tight ends showcases his capability, drawing attention in the NFL mock drafts ahead of the Dolphins' 13th overall pick.
"I think I can just come in, be able to move around, be that chess piece, so to speak," Starks said.
"Ultimate chess piece" was something Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said he liked about how he can use cornerback Jalen Ramsey in his defense.
"Great meeting, great coaching staff," said Starks, who added he hasn't paid much attention to mock drafts.
"I beat him more than he beat me," Starks recalled, "and they figured if I can cover him, I can cover anyone in the country."
