Miami Beach's Historic Art Deco District Could Be Bulldozed in Favor of High-Rise Towers
Briefly

A proposed update to Florida's 2023 Live Local Act could see hundreds of Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach demolished to make way for high-rise apartment towers. City leaders, including Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, have expressed strong opposition, highlighting the potential loss of the city's unique architectural identity and its significance as a major tourist attraction. Currently, only eight buildings are protected by the National Register of Historic Places, and there are concerns that such changes would transform Miami Beach's character, likening it to urban environments like Manhattan.
As things stand now, only eight buildings in the entire city would be spared from demolition—those currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Miami Beach's Art Deco District must be protected not only for its historic significance, but also because it is a major source of revenue—as Florida's second-largest tourist attraction after Disney World.
