Bonta stated, 'These predators are looking at the disaster with dollar signs in their eyes, instead of kindness in their hearts. That is unconscionable, despicable, and unacceptable.'
The law prohibits any increase in rent or prices above 10% after a state of emergency is declared, and for newly sold items, prices cannot exceed 50% over costs.
Violators face criminal prosecution with potential jail sentences of up to one year and substantial fines, alongside civil penalties for each violation.
