The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously against the DACA program, citing that the executive branch had overstepped its authority, while leaving current beneficiaries' permits intact.
The ruling restricts new applications, thus diminishing the number of DACA beneficiaries. More than 500,000 immigrants have lived in legal limbo due to ongoing legal battles.
DACA, introduced by Obama in 2012, was designed to protect those brought to the U.S. as children amid congressional inaction. Trump’s administration sought to end it.
This recent decision may lead to a third Supreme Court appearance for DACA, following previous legal challenges that arose throughout both the Obama and Trump administrations.
