As independent, creator-owned media companies flourish, Rooster Teeth is looking to join the party

Rooster Teeth has regained independence after being acquired by founder Michael "Burnie" Burns through Box Canyon Productions. The company, originally founded in 2003 and previously subjected to corporate management, struggled with a toxic work culture and financial losses. Burns aims to restore the brand's connection with its fanbase and shift towards a more independent operation, mirroring successful strategies seen in other creator-owned media companies such as Smosh. Fans are eagerly anticipating the direction Burns will take to ensure profitability and a healthier work environment.

Rooster Teeth is not the only creator-founded media company to stagnate after falling into corporate ownership. Disney acquired Maker Studios and shut it down entirely in 2019.
