Backlash after 250k Bromley welfare fund for vulnerable residents axed
Briefly

On January 22, 2025, Bromley Council's Executive decided to cut financial support for a vital fund that assists about 400 low-income families annually. The £250,000 funding, sourced from a government grant, provided essential household items like beds and fridges, crucial for those in severe hardship. Bromley Foodbank, which emphasized the negative impact on vulnerable residents, argues that this withdrawal will lead to deteriorating living standards and higher costs for local services. Campaigners call for alternative solutions to be explored and are urging the Council to reconsider its decision to ditch the fund.
The council has cited financial pressures as the reason for the cut, but campaigners argue alternative solutions were not explored.
According to Bromley Foodbank, the fund has been a lifeline for families who have lost everything in house fires, domestic abuse survivors rebuilding their lives.
Bromley Food Bank argues this could lead to greater costs for the council and local health services as vulnerable residents face worsening conditions.
Ray Nowak, campaigner for Bromley Borough Foodbank, said: "We work on the front lines... and see firsthand how the absence of basic household essentials quickly worsens a person's quality of life."
