Belgrade will introduce free public transport for all residents starting January 1, 2025, with Mayor Aleksandar Sapic stating, 'No one will have to pay for a ticket anymore.' This move aims to alleviate the city’s severe traffic congestion, where car density has increased by 250,000 over the last decade.
The Serbian capital currently faces significant traffic challenges, having one of the few major European capitals without an underground system. Sapic emphasized that investing in free transit is vital for reducing gridlock in Belgrade while highlighting the ambitious plan to replace the entire public transport fleet by 2027.
