HBO's Bill Maher reassessed his initial outrage over President Trump's decision to fire multiple inspectors general after highlighting staggering annual losses due to fraud, estimated between $233 and $521 billion. Reflecting on claims made by Elon Musk regarding financial misconduct by Treasury officials, Maher noted the significant implications for the watchdog role of inspectors general. He acknowledged the necessity of scrutinizing the effectiveness of these officials, suggesting that such immense financial waste might warrant a reevaluation of their performance rather than outright condemnation of their dismissal.
I mean, Musk said career Treasury officials are breaking the law every hour of every day by approving payments that are fraudulent or do not match the funding laws passed by Congress.
That's not the Trump administration. The federal government loses an estimated $233 to $521 billion annually to fraud.
I thought, well, that's not good. That's their job to watchdog stuff. But if you're losing $521 billion a year, how good are you Watchdogging?
I'm not saying we should have fired them, but said the revelation of wasteful spending from the Government Accountability Office was enough for him to give Trump's mass firings a second look.
