Blow for libraries at risk of closure as 'no group offers to take them over'
Briefly

In May 2024, Havering Council proposed closing four public libraries as a cost-saving measure due to significant financial challenges. The libraries at risk—Collier Row, Elm Park, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, and South Hornchurch—account for only 20 percent of annual visits. During a council meeting, inquiries about alternative management by community trusts revealed no interest from groups. Efforts to generate revenue through commercial activities and partnerships, such as room lettings for elderly care, are ongoing, but larger libraries are seen as better suited for these initiatives.
Cllr Ford mentioned that no community groups expressed interest in running libraries earmarked for closure, highlighting a lack of viable alternatives for public library operation.
The library service is always looking to maximize income through room lettings and other commercial activity, illustrating attempts to bolster financial support for the services.
