Bronx readies for congestion pricing as green project takes shape
Briefly

"We're going to create the largest green infrastructure project in New York City," said Karen Argenti of the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality. This initiative, aimed at daylighting sections of Tibbets Brook, highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance the environment while benefiting the local community. Experts predict that rejuvenating the brook will not only address flooding but also improve the overall wastewater management, creating a positive ecosystem that integrates with urban life.
"What we're gonna do is take this body of water and create a new stream, which is almost a recreation of the old, historical Tibbets Brook," she explained. This project will meander down the old CSX Putnam Trail to the Harlem River, emphasizing a deep-seated commitment to restoring historical waterways and improving urban waterways' functionality and aesthetic value.
"We have some of the highest asthma rates in the country in this community. Our children-1 in 5 have asthma. We can't take one more truck with our current health situation," Mychal Johnson expressed, articulating the community’s concerns regarding the ramifications of forthcoming congestion pricing. The intersection of their daily struggles with urban planning holds potential risks that could amplify existing health disparities.
