The drying out and degradation of Earth's land is an existential crisis that could affect 5 billion people by the end of the century, according to a UN report released this week.
UN scientists say climate change, which is warming the planet and disrupting rainfall patterns, is the primary cause of land degradation, alongside deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices.
'The land degradation crisis receives far less attention than climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, despite the fact that over 100 million hectares of land are degraded each year,' said David Goodman.
'This phenomenon is sparing no country, no biome,' said UNCCD chief Ibrahim Thiaw. 'Droughts were reported in the Philippines for the first time this year.'
