The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) has lost significant federal funding following objections to its advocacy for a ceasefire in Gaza. The alliance was set to receive over $50 million under the Inflation Reduction Act to manage subgrants for local environmental efforts. However, conservative attacks led to the cancellation of its program by the EPA, significantly impacting its planned outreach to polluted communities. CJA's executive director emphasized that the funding would have fostered public health and sustainable job opportunities, reflecting a broader struggle between climate justice efforts and political opposition.
The cancelled program "would have channeled resources into projects that not only protect public health and safety but also create sustainable economic opportunities for jobs," CJA executive director KD Chavez said.
CJA was chosen to distribute subgrants to EPA regions 8-10, which includes most of the Western US, and was responsible for outreach to tribal communities.
