Dead birds in Taunton, at UMass Amherst further fuel bird flu concerns
Briefly

Two Canada geese discovered dead on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus have tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), marking the first cases on the campus. The university is taking precautions by informing officials and placing warning signs, while investigations into multiple dead birds found in Taunton and Plymouth are underway. State officials suspect bird flu is responsible for over 60 waterfowl deaths in Massachusetts. Residents are urged to report sick or dead birds to the UMass Environmental Health and Safety department.
Out of an abundance of caution, the university has informed town officials as well as faculty who may interact with animals to take proactive measures to reduce the risk of transmission to themselves or other animals.
State officials said over the weekend they suspect bird flu is to blame for the deaths of more than 60 Canada geese, swans, and ducks found dead at Billington Sea in Plymouth.
