In a rush, it seems the human body can rise to the occasion when necessary, even without formal training. Instinct kicked in, and I gave the Heimlich manoeuvre.
I knew I was winging it with the Heimlich, relying solely on what I had read elsewhere; yet, it felt like my body was operating on instinct.
I was struck by how those around us, including restaurant staff, remained indifferent; it felt surreal to be experiencing such a serious situation while others simply continued with their meals.
After the scare, neither my friend nor I could shake off the embarrassment of having caused a scene, despite the potential life-and-death stakes involved.
