The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to appoint leading trial attorney Daniel Guarnera as director of its Bureau of Competition, following aggressive antitrust pursuits against major tech firms. Commissioned by FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Guarnera's leadership is expected to bolster antitrust actions against giants like Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft. The appointments signal a commitment to a vigorous enforcement strategy, emphasizing the agency's focus on monopolization. These selections await approval from commissioners, which traditionally occurs on a bipartisan basis. Guarnera's prior experience at the Justice Department's antitrust division contributes to his anticipated leadership role.
"Dan is an experienced and talented antitrust lawyer with excellent leadership skills," said Jonathan Kanter, who helmed the antitrust division during the Biden administration.
The appointments indicate the agency is likely to keep an aggressive enforcement stance, in particular against giant technology companies.
