In El Fasher, Sudan, a recent attack on the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital killed 70 people, including patients and companions. Local officials have attributed the assault to the Rapid Support Forces, which are reportedly losing ground to Sudanese military forces. The WHO condemned the violence and emphasized the dire need for peace in the region, as ongoing fighting and sieges have severely impacted civilians' wellbeing. Efforts for international mediation and sanctions against military leaders have yet to yield a cessation of hostilities, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The appalling attack on Saudi hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, led to 19 injuries and 70 deaths among patients and companions, the WHO director-general wrote on X.
Another health facility in Al Malha also was attacked on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing violence in a city already under perilous conditions.
Civilians in El Fasher have already endured months of suffering, violence and gross human rights abuses under the prolonged siege.
We continue to call for a cessation of all attacks on health care in Sudan and to allow full access for the swift restoration of the facilities.
