"The Team GB pair had dreamed of becoming the first British Olympic skating medallists since Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in 1992. Instead, they endured a nightmare on ice. Their chances went barely a minute into their free dance routine. The crowd had just started to boisterously clap along to the Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), when Fear stumbled and lost her balance through the twizzle sequence."
"I can't believe I just did that, Fear said. I feel so bad, I'm devastated. I'm in shock. It's such a shame because I know what we're capable of. I just feel so bad. I don't have the words yet and it will take a while to process it. Asked to describe what had happened, she said: Just a really costly technical mistake, which was tough very early in the programme because I knew that we lost bronze at that point."
Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson aimed to become the first British Olympic skating medallists since 1992 but suffered a costly error early in their free dance. Barely a minute into the routine, during the twizzle sequence as the crowd clapped to the Proclaimers, Fear stumbled and lost her balance. One yellow box became two and the pair slipped from fourth after the rhythm dance to seventh overall. Fear expressed devastation and said the mistake would take time to process while trying to salvage the rest of the programme. Gibson said underperforming at the Olympics is particularly hard. Gold went to Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, a pairing that prompted unease and scrutiny after Fournier Beaudry's recent switch of citizenship and allegations involving Cizeron's former partner.
