In 2024, fiber broadband deployments achieved a record of 10.3 million U.S. homes, with a total of 88.1 million homes passed. This amounts to fiber passing 56.5% of U.S. households, with a take-rate of 45%. The survey highlights that fiber's growth positions it as a strong competitor against hybrid fiber-coaxial cable, which lost 33% of customers where fiber is available. With expectations for continued growth, the fiber industry anticipates a substantial rise in homes passed by 2029, driven by rising demand and improving inventory conditions.
‘In the midst of the current broadband boom, it is encouraging to see the preference for fiber growing,’ said Deborah Kish, Fiber Broadband Association vice president of research and workforce development. 'Fiber provides the most reliable, high-quality broadband experience compared to alternative technologies, making fiber the clear choice to connect communities and close the digital divide.'
The research also found that among customers churning in the past two years, hybrid fiber-coaxial cable had a net loss of 33% in areas where fiber was available, indicating a strong migration of customers toward fiber.
