The Fifth Avenue Snowflake for Humanity Foundation rang in the holiday season on Nov. 22 with the illumination ceremony of the iconic Fifth Avenue Holiday Snowflake, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. This noble event brightens the holiday season for locals and tourists alike, asserting itself as a beacon of hope that transcends mere decoration.
Despite the consistent rain, the lighting ceremony featured festive performances, including a special rendition of 'Oh Holy Night' by opera soprano Angel Blue and baritone Dylan Hughes, encapsulating the joyous spirit of the event.
The snowflake, designed to float gracefully 50 feet above the 57th Street intersection, is a dazzling 30-foot tall, 3,300-pound structure woven with 16,500 individual crystal prisms and animated by over 760,000 colors, showcasing an endless array of algorithmic patterns.
Having raised tens of millions for global charities since 2003, this year’s Snowflake campaign supports Citymeals on Wheels, which has delivered 70 million meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers since its inception in 1981.
