A recent stage adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm sheds light on the themes of oppression and power dynamics. Despite being written 80 years ago after Orwell's experiences in the Spanish Civil War, the narrative resonates with current political situations, reflecting the gradual shift of leaders from being allies to authoritarian figures. The audience observed how leaders manipulate public perception and consolidate power, leading to a dire fate for the hard-working populace, likened to the fate of Boxer, the horse in the story.
Watching last week, few in the audience were thinking of Stalin and Trotsky. All must have been thinking about right now and how, little by little, a leader goes from saying, I am with you to I am the chosen one.
Er, well it rarely ends well for the loyal, hard-working and exhausted masses under the yoke of a totalitarian dictator's regime.
