Workers at Deutsche Post, part of the DHL logistics group, planned a one-day strike for wage hikes amid high living costs. The Verdi trade union demands a 7% pay increase and additional paid leave for 170,000 employees, with leaders emphasizing the need for these changes to combat inflation. Deutsche Post argues that industry costs necessitate "economically viable" increases, leading to contentious negotiations. Recent labor actions across various sectors in Germany signal widespread discontent regarding pay and the cost of living amidst economic challenges from the pandemic and geopolitical tensions.
"In the second round of negotiations last week there was hardly any movement and no tangible negotiation results," Verdi deputy chairperson Andrea Kocsis said, highlighting the stalling negotiation process.
"We mean [this] seriously," Kocsis stressed. "We're ready to fight for our demands," demonstrating the union's commitment to pursuing its wage increase goals.
Kocsis stressed the need for wage increases to cope with the high living costs, calling the firm's position on pay hikes "unacceptable," showcasing the urgency of the workers' demands.
Deutsche Post argued that costs in the industry were too high and called for "economically viable" salary increases, reflecting the company's financial challenges amidst economic pressures.
