Initially, it seemed as though reviews were disappearing, but they weren't lost; the display counts simply showed lower numbers. Small business owners began to see improvements with their review counts slowly climbing back to accurate figures. Google has assured users that they are addressing the problem and encourages patience as full review counts are restored.
We're aware of an issue affecting some Google Business Profiles, causing some profiles to show lower-than-actual review counts due to a display issue.
The issue has been resolved for us and our review count is (nearly) back to where it was.
