"In an emotional funeral Mass, Mr Daly's young son, Archie, also paid tribute from the altar, and said he will "love him forever". He thanked him for teaching him to ride a bike, playing football with him and helping him with his homework. "He was the best Dad. He was a really funny person and always made me laugh," said Archie."
"The ceremony, led by parish priest Fr Aidan Crowley, saw gifts offered in memory of Mr Daly, beginning with the hymn Christ, Be Our Light. Mr Daly's work uniform was offered as a sign of how much he loved his job as a postman, while "another major part of his life" was reflected in the hurleys and sliotars brought to the altar."
"In his own tribute, Fr Crowley said that Sunday "started out as a promising day and a successful day, with no idea about the tragedy that would ensue", as the town had been celebrating Doneraile's Avondhu Junior B Hurling Championship victory the day before. "We don't define today by his death, or the manner of his death, but by his life, and what he contributed to his family and community during his life," sai"
Barry Daly (46), originally from Newtwopothouse and living in Doneraile, was killed near his home last Saturday night after a suspected violent assault following an argument in a pub. He worked as a postman covering the Doneraile and Mallow areas and was a father of four. Post offices across the area closed as a mark of respect and colleagues attended the Requiem Mass at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Doneraile. His son Archie paid tribute from the altar, and gifts at the funeral included his work uniform, hurleys and sliotars, jellies and a pair of his Crocs. Fr Aidan Crowley asked that Daly be remembered for his life and contributions to family and community.
