This week, technology companies are showcasing varied compliance with President Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America." Google's services prominently display the new name, whereas Apple Maps has yet to adopt it, despite a forthcoming update. Meanwhile, Baidu Maps continues to use the original name, and Microsoft's Bing Maps redundantly refers to it as the Gulf of Mexico. This inconsistency raises questions about corporate responses to political directives and the impact on geographic information accuracy.
Curious how other online maps are reacting? I did some searching to find out. Google appears to be the first company to start using the "Gulf of America" name on a major navigation service.
Although Google is the only predominant navigation service currently displaying "Gulf of America," its commitment to the new name fluctuates depending on the map zoom level.
Unlike Google Maps, its main competitor for smartphone navigation apps, Apple Maps has not yet changed its naming for the Gulf of Mexico. Bloomberg reports the name change is coming to Apple Maps very soon.
Bing Maps not only features the Gulf of Mexico name but even repeats it twice, while Baidu Maps in China still lists it as the Gulf of Mexico.
