The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau finalized a rule prohibiting lenders from considering unpaid medical bills in credit evaluations for mortgages, car loans, or business loans.
The CFPB estimates the new rule will remove $49 million in medical debt from the credit reports of 15 million Americans, increasing credit scores by an average of 20 points.
