Humanure': RHS plans rollout of first compost toilet to fertilise flowerbeds
Briefly

This summer, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) will inaugurate its first composting toilet at RHS Garden Wisley in an effort to leverage environmentally-friendly waste management. Designed for use by students and staff, the toilet is part of the Greener Skills Garden, dedicated to teaching sustainable horticulture practices. Lewis George, the RHS horticultural engagement officer, outlined that the human waste will compost for 18 months, followed by an additional six months in regular compost piles before being applied to non-edible ornamental plants. The initiative aims to raise awareness of sewage management while preventing river pollution.
The Royal Horticultural Society's new composting toilet at RHS Garden Wisley utilizes human waste to promote sustainable gardening and reduce sewage spills into rivers.
Constructed in a new Greener Skills Garden, the facility will educate horticulture students and the public on sustainable practices, addressing the climate crisis.
Lewis George emphasizes the careful management of humanure, ensuring that it will only enhance non-edible plants after a rigorous composting process.
The initiative represents over 200 years of gardening tradition at RHS, now integrating human waste composting as an innovative environmental solution.
