The Hizaqv language, once vibrant in the lands of western Canada, is now critically endangered. Over a century of wars, disease, and colonial assimilation has drastically reduced the Heiltsuk population and erased much of their cultural heritage, leaving only seven fluent speakers. Despite this loss, the community remains hopeful as they strive to preserve their language, which is vital to their identity and their relationship with the land. Numerous Indigenous languages face similar fates, emphasizing the urgency of revitalization efforts.
"Hizaqv is a deeply relational and nuanced language. It teaches us to relate to the land and speaks to how to exist in our homelands."
"The loss of our language would be profound. Without it, we no longer have our guiding signpost, which is part of our identity."
