'I feel personally sorry for Ray' - RTE boss Kevin Bakhurst on D'Arcy departure and the mystery over who owns 60,000 artwork in Montrose
"Mr Bakhurst said D'Arcy (61) "did a fantastic job with RTÉ for a number of years but the decision to cut the show was based on numbers and significant audience research". He insisted D'Arcy's departure was "handled fairly" even though the presenter had said he was "hugely disappointed" with the process. "I feel sorry personally for Ray. I think Patricia Monahan, head of audio, explained as much as she can about that. I think it's always difficult when you make changes and individuals are involved", Mr Bakhurst said."
"Meanwhile, it emerged that an art gallery is claiming ownership of a Gerard Dillon painting valued at €60,000 which is hanging on the wall at RTÉ. However, RTÉ remains unsure of who actually owns the painting titled "Kitchen interior with seated woman" or how exactly it came to be in its possession, likely several decades ago. "We believe that it may well have been lent to us by an art gallery about 40 or 50 years ago," Mr Bakhurst said. "We're trying to find the paperwork."
Mr Bakhurst said Ray D'Arcy did a fantastic job with RTÉ for years, but the decision to cut the show was driven by numbers and significant audience research. He stated the departure was handled fairly, expressed personal sympathy for D'Arcy, and said D'Arcy had warning of possible changes for a couple of years. Mr Bakhurst confirmed he had not spoken to D'Arcy since his departure. An art gallery claims ownership of a Gerard Dillon painting valued at €60,000 hanging at RTÉ; RTÉ is unsure of provenance and is searching for paperwork, which the gallery also lacks.
