When looking for a lube, Finn recommends finding ones with a low number of ingredients that are primarily derived from plants. Skip lubes with fragrances or flavors—they're generally safe to use, but best avoided if you're prone to infection.
One thing that should be avoided, a 'red-flag ingredient,' as Finn puts it, is glycerin, which is included to reduce the loss of moisture. Glycerin, however, is a sugar alcohol and has been linked to the promotion of the growth of yeast.
Another ingredient to avoid: the spermicide nonoxynol-9. That ingredient 'can damage the vaginal lining and make the body a lot more susceptible to infection or irritation,' said Finn. 'It can actually eat away at that protective barrier.'
