Ellis Prep Academy in the Bronx serves students who recently arrived in the United States. The school community faced significant disruption when 20-year-old senior Dylan Lopez Contreras was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a routine immigration court hearing in May, becoming the first New York public school student detained by ICE. Contreras, who had completed an arduous journey from Venezuela, was detained at Moshannon Valley ICE processing center in Pennsylvania. His detention shocked classmates like Roger, who have since processed their grief and anger while supporting their friend. In response, Dylan and five classmates documented their experiences using disposable cameras, illustrations, and writing to capture their thoughts and feelings during this challenging period.
