An investigation by the Guardian has revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is likely altering the publication dates on old press releases. This manipulation is reportedly intended to skew Google search results, making outdated information about deportations appear current and influencing public perception in an environment of fear. Thousands of these press releases, some dating back to 2008, now bear a false publication date of January 24, 2025, resembling a broader immigration enforcement campaign. This has raised concerns among immigration lawyers and tech experts about the implications of such practices on public understanding and trust.
When people do these searches on Google, they'll find a range of sources and information, including recent news articles," a Google spokesperson told the Guardian.
These are old articles that are now appearing at the top of the Google and Bing search results as recent headlines, where no other government agency is doing this.
