President Javier Milei of Argentina has come under scrutiny and legal action following his promotion of a cryptocurrency named $LIBRA, which rapidly collapsed after his tweet. The intended purpose of $LIBRA was to stimulate economic growth by funding small businesses; however, its value plummeted, resulting in substantial investor losses. Lawyers allege Milei's promotion amounted to fraud, suggesting a 'rug pull' scam may have occurred, and political figures have called for impeachment proceedings against him for his role in the situation and perceived breach of ethics.
Jonatan Baldiviezo, one of the lawyers who filed charges against Milei on Sunday, alleged that "an indeterminate number of frauds" had been committed.
"Within this illicit association, the crime of fraud was committed, in which the president's actions were essential," claimed Baldiviezo.
