Libyan rap has emerged as a significant cultural expression amidst political instability and socio-economic challenges in 2023 and 2024. The genre flourished particularly after the Benghazi Summer Festival marked a revival in live performances, showcasing local talent like MC Mansour Unknown. However, recent crackdowns by both Eastern and Western authorities threaten this growth, as new regulations require musicians to secure permits that evaluate the appropriateness of their content. This move reflects broader societal tensions about freedom of expression and the role of art in turbulent political landscapes.
"The spread of rap songs, some of which contain obscene words, violate the moral values of the Libyan Muslim society," stated the Eastern administration.
Last August, the Eastern administration under General Khalifa Hiftar gave their okay for the first Benghazi Summer Festival in 15 years, providing a rare opportunity for local artists.
