Christopher Kowalewski, a 49-year-old corrections officer, was accused of stealing $110,096 in insurance reimbursement checks meant for his wife's back surgery. He allegedly cashed two checks and deposited the others into a joint account, using the money for personal expenditures. This fraudulent act was facilitated by his position as the policyholder of his wife's medical account, with checks made out to him. He faces second-degree grand larceny charges which could lead to a 15-year prison sentence, with the court appearance set for March 3.
"Public servants are entrusted with doing the right thing, and when they take advantage of the system for personal gain, it hurts everyone," said Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Kowalewski, 49, allegedly stole 11 of his wife's insurance checks, using the funds for personal expenses instead of the intended medical use.
